Very helpful book!

A must read for anyone who works in the service industry! This book was recommended to me by my bar manager, one of the most professional and talented restaurant managers I have ever met. He was on point, as always! This book gave me not only an outline of why people tip both socially and scientifically, but also many new ideas of how to make more money! Worth the investment weather you are a veteran or just beginning as a server!

If you are no stranger to the hospitality industry, this very insightful book takes all of the knowledge that you may or may not know and wraps it in a nice, neat package that you are then able to give to your servers...in plain English.

As a restaurant manager, I have begun preaching the Kikland message and have started to see a personalization of service that just simply can not be achieved by simply telling them that they need to connect with their customers. This book gives both the manager and the server the tools to make those connections without it seeming like effort is being given.

Our Children Need Great Parent and Communities as Well as Great Teachers

Excellent and balanced presentation of the reasons why many citizens have unrealistic expectations of teachers. Many citizens expect teachers to succeed with students who are hungry, neglected or abused at home. Mr. Kumashiro makes it clear that while teachers can certainly help, it takes involvement of the greater community and of parents for children to realize their full potential.

Not so Bad Teacher

Kumashiro shares his perspectives on the standards and standardization movement from the perspective of a classroom teacher and researcher. He reviews the history of the movement and the social, political, and economic drivers behind the drive to make teaching a business. There were many parts of Kumashiro's story that I have seen in my own experience as a classroom teacher, the pressure to teach like the "good teacher" who was getting higher test scores for his students, and the hiring of unprepared "experts" who have a degree in a subject but no pedagogical training are just two examples. Probably the most powerful topic in this little book (for me) was Kumashiro's discussion of the efforts to bypass traditional colleges of education and fast track content experts into classrooms. A call to action for all concerned with the future of education and children in America.

Kumashiro provides an important text getting to the point that teachers are constantly to blame for our educational woes. Parents and teachers will benefit greatly by citing Kumashiro's to the point arguments that cleanly tear down the popular facade that politicians and business-minded people rely upon to further their agendas. Great ending to a great series

This was a great ending to a great series...my favorite series. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes magic, or fantasy. Actually I would recommend all of her books to everyone, she's a great writer an its my dream to meet her, I hope you love her books as much as I do

The Final Word

Celia's Journey is done. Apparently. I really hope more is written! The 7 book series is excellent, and starts out similarly to the Harry Potter series, but goes its own way after that. I laughed, cried, and a couple of times found myself sobbing! But I love this series and wish I was part of Celia's world. Her journey is the best!

It was a wonderful story!!! Great end to the series although I would really enjoy an afterward to see how Neeghan likes RAGS and to see how Josh and Celia work out. It's a great book, very similar to Harry Potter. Hope this helps and enjoy!!!

This book had me hooked after page one. What would you do if your father was a bully, you ran away, hid and a handsome cowboy found you on his property?! You marry him of course and learn the way of how to please him. Can I say yummy? Yes I can so I suggest if you want to read what the hero taught Gretchen. Like the book says Guiding Gretchen get it today.

OMG! Oh please write more books like this. It had it all: abused heroine, strong sexual alpha male, BDSM, virgin/naive/sheltered heroine, hero falling in love with heroine, badass revenge/protective hero climax scene and awesome dialogue. I loved this book. No cheating and hero is obsessed with heroine. My kind of hero: a black knight in rugged armor on top big black horse. This books is rated NC-17!

Gretchen Nelson ran away from home after her mother died leaving her alone with an abusive father. She finds refuge inside the barn of an “abandoned” farm. Chance Spencer discovers Gretchen while inspecting his new property. After hearing Gretchen’s tale, Chance decides there is only one thing that he can do to help her – marry her. While Chance wasn’t looking for a wife he isn’t all that upset by the prospect of unexpectedly taking one.

Watching Gretchen and Chance, two perfect strangers, navigate the waters of married life was enjoyable and sometimes hilarious. Gretchen, however, took to domestic discipline like a duck to water. I enjoyed seeing them grow as a couple. I loved that Chance was patient with Gretchen but strict with her.

Guiding Gretchen was an enjoyable quick read. If I had one complaint, it would be there wasn’t enough spanking!

Explaining the role of Big Gods to WEIRDs

As a fully paid up human services' professional member of WEIRD (defined by Dr. Norenzayan as Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) I am constantly searching for academic publications that may help me understand my clients' behaviours and decision making processes. In the many decades of my professional life I have come to categorize my professional readings into two broad groups: dense academic and popular. The challenge that I have faced has been that the 'dense academic' writers have usually burdened me with their own jargon which may be easily understood in their own circles but which takes a great deal of patience for an interested WEIRD to wade through and decipher. Sometimes what I discover in such 'dense academic' writings is rewarding enough to justify my time and intellectual effort in reading them; however, most of the time I find that my efforts were wasted and that the dense writing that I worked through imparted little or no new information. I have generally no grand expectation of writings that I assign to the 'popular' category and so I am immune to being disappointed by this category.
'Big Gods: how religion transformed cooperation and conflict' has been that exceedingly rare gem of reading for me: an exceptionally well written, coherent and accessible academic book. Through diligently documented reviews and analyses of current research in a wide range of academic disciplines, Dr. Norenzayan argues that belief in a powerful god who is assumed to be aware of believers' behaviours has played an important and necessary role in policing human beings' ability to transact and cooperate with each other. The Big Gods have been essentially a powerful and necessary protective factor for humanity's evolution. Dr. Norenzayan then moves on to examine how in the more advanced societies of our time social institutions such as the police and the judicial system have replaced the power of the omnipotent god: pro-social secular people may not believe in the wrath of god but as atheists they generally do believe in the rules of law of their societies. Dr. Norenzayan concludes that humanity has now reached a point of tension between atheists (especially in the advanced societies) and the numerous religious groups (predominantly in emerging societies) that will continue into the future. The very same tensions, of course, may co-exist in the same society as evidenced by the power and political persuasion of groups that are referred to as the Religious Right in USA and Canada.

The Big Gods has now raised a new question for this WEIRD: how to motivate and rehabilitate those who have rejected the Big Gods and secular laws? I shall continue to read about new research in the hope that Dr. Norenzayan represents a new trend among academic writers.

A Groundbreaking Book

As a fellow academic, it is wonderful to find a colleague who is willing to probe the personal, rather than the political, impact of religion. Norenzayan is a highly respected social psychologist, perhaps best known for his provocative work on the WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) bias in psychological research. I found the book a provocative read from beginning to end. It is also extremely well-written. I really think it is a groundbreaking book. Very highly recommended for anyone interested in this topic.

Excellent & thougt-provoking

Norenzayan has written a masterful examination of the question concerning why some religions are more 'successful' than others. This is a must-read to those interested in religion, historical change, and atheism. This is truly one of the best expositions that I have ever read.

Joseph Penso de la Vega, best known as Joseph de la Vega (ca.1650-1692), was a successful Jewish merchant, poet, and philanthropist residing in 17th century Amsterdam. He became famous for his masterpiece "Confusion of Confusions" the oldest book ever written on the stock exchange business. Although not a descriptive account of the process of stock trading, Penso presented the history of speculation in stocks and acquainted the reader with the sophisticated financial instruments used. The dialogue format allowed the reader to understand the respective perspectives of the various market participants and the intricacies of speculation and trading. Penso also came up with four basic rules of the share market that are still of the greatest relevance today: The first rule in speculation is: Never advise anyone to buy or sell shares. Where guessing correctly is a form of witchcraft, counsel cannot be put on airs. The second rule: Accept both your profits and regrets. It is best to seize what comes to hand when it comes, and not expect that your good fortune and the favorable circumstances will last. The third rule: Profit in the share market is goblin treasure: at one moment, it is carbuncles, the next it is coal; one moment diamonds, and the next pebbles. Sometimes, they are the tears that Aurora leaves on the sweet morning's grass, at other times, they are just tears. The fourth rule: He who wishes to become rich from this game must have both money and patience. Includes Foreword by Hermann Kellenbenz.

The magic of not being "normal"

This is a lovely story of a young man with ADHD who gets into the kind of unbelievable trouble that can happen to those with "butterfly brains" and is rescued by a man who is a "science geek" Neither of them is really "normal" and they are both very sweet as they see what is wonderful about the other. They both grow as people gaining self understanding and courage along the way.

One of my dearest friends has ADHD and Amy Lane captures some of the magic of them in this story. Wonderful connections with nature, joy and awe, and endless energy to do good that produces results over time. I like that she points out that most people with ADHD are smart. This has certainly been my experience knowing several people who have ADHD. They just need a few adaptations to focus on one task to completion. My friend used to have a a sign that said "Dear God, I can explain."

In the midst of discovering each other, they have a mystery of what is causing frogs to be deformed, crazy ex-boyfriend troubles, bad sex and good sex, and an absent father pulled together in a good plot.

Whiskey is soooo smoothe!!!

Wow, I just finished my review with the Paranormal Romance Guilds Dual Review Team, of Amy Lanes August release of A Solid Core of Alpha and here I am in September doing a solo review for her newest release Clearwater. What are the odds???

Reading this newest story, my first thought was I found a human Whim...Do you remember Lithia's Constant Whim? A novella from the world of the Little Goddess series?. Whim is described by the author As Constant as a bumblebee in a hurricane and as faithful as a stray breeze. Enter Patrick Cleary.

We are taught through Amy Lanes eyes what ADHD is, and how it affects the minds of people who are afflicted with it. But, we are taught in the only way Amy Lane knows, through love, family and heart.

We meet Patrick Cleary who has decided he is a mess. He has been advantaged financially all his life, living off a rich Daddy, having the `best of everything' and not being honest with his father or himself. When that day finally arrives, will anyone take him seriously?

Wesley `Whiskey' Keenen, is a biologist, living on the dirtiest, tackiest houseboat in the middle of a delta swamp. He is there with fellow biologist and friend Freya nicknamed Fly Bait, running tests on mutant frogs. He sees a car careening off a bridge one evening, as he sits out side looking at the stars.. He watches in horrer as the driver swims away leaving the unconscious passenger to die. Whiskey pulls the passenger out and saves his life. This is their story.

Again Amy Lane has yet again detoured from her accustomed path and has not only written a wonderful love story of patience and trust, but she has entwined all of it adding a good mystery whodunit. Whiskey is as sexy as his name sounds. He brings such strength into the growing relationship, you cannot help but love him.

Patrick thinks himself a giant screw up, there is not a moment where he is not falling or bunking himself...a giant Klutz. But as Whiskey watches this slip of a man, he `gets it'. He sees more control when Patrick takes his meds . They grow into a friendship that could lead to more. Patrick does not want to leave the houseboat, he does not want to contact his father Shawn. He has found something here and loves helping with the frogs he has befriended and even named.
I loved how we see Patrick grow, and then we get into the findings of the pollution in the swamps which leads us to the bigger mysteries. Again the story was paced beautifully, the character ensemble was great...With Amy stories, as always the good are good and the bad are truly evil. I loved it when Patrick with some prodding from Whiskey can find his true beauty within. Totally a fun read
