HESHAM SOLIMAN is a member of the Advanced Networking group at Flarion Technologies. Preface

This book focuses primarily on the current Mobile IPv6 standard, which was finalized in 2003 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It also covers current proposed optimizations and applications. The aim of this book is to explain in detail the current Mobile IPv6 specification and, more importantly, the assumptions that led to its final design. These assumptions are extremely important to developers and researchers in the field of IPv6 mobility. The topic of IPv6 mobility management has gained a lot of momentum over the last decade, especially with the growth of the wireless industry and the more recent convergence between wireless telecommunication networks (supporting over 1.5 billion devices) and the Internet.

Research on packet switching started back in the 1960s and continued through the 1980s, producing the Internet as we know it today. The predominant Internet Protocol (IP) supported on the Internet today is the IP version 4 (IPv4). When IPv4 was first designed, the Internet was not expected to grow as fast as it did or to be used for the vast and diverse number of applications used today. In 1992, the IAB (known then as the Internet Activities Board and now called the Internet Architecture Board) forecasted the expected shortage in IP addresses in the near future and the imminent need for a new version of IP. A Next Generation Directorate was formed in IETF to choose the new protocol. In 1994, the Next Generation Directorate made its decision. The new protocol was named IP version 6 (IPv6), since version number 5 was already taken by another experimental protocol.

Mobile IPv6 provides mobility support for IPv6, allowing devices to move within the Internet topology while being reachable and maintaining ongoing connections. To understand Mobile IPv6 and the assumptions behind the final specification, IPv6 needs to be understood in some detail. In addition, the fundamental principles of Internet routing and naming services must be understood. In this regard, this book is self-contained; it starts by describing the Internet protocol suite, commonly called the TCP/IP protocol stack, then describes the core IPv6 specifications in detail before getting into the details of Mobile IPv6 and its optimizations. Finally, the use of IPv6 and Mobile IPv6 are presented in the context of a third-generation cellular system based on the third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards.

Organization of This Book

Mobility management is a very large area that impacts many parts of the Internet protocol stack. In order for you to gain the maximum benefit from this book, it has been divided into four parts. Part One includes Chapters 1 and 2 and provides the necessary background about IPv6 and the Internet. This information is essential for understanding the subsequent parts. Readers already familiar with the Internet specifications and the details of IPv6 may choose to quickly browse through this part and start reading the next.

Part Two provides a detailed analysis of the Mobile IPv6 protocol, starting with an overview of the protocol's operation in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 introduces the topic of security on the Internet, describes the issues involved in securing communication between two machines, and presents the current state of the art in this area. The aim of this chapter is to help you understand the issues involved in securing Mobile IPv6 and the assumptions made in this part of the protocol design. Chapter 5 discusses in detail the security threats, requirements, and design of Mobile IPv6 security.

Part Three is dedicated to providing a theoretical evaluation of the performance of Mobile IPv6 handovers. First, the impact of Mobile IPv6 handovers on the transport layer protocols (and consequently applications) is presented in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 presents several optimizations aimed at improving Mobile IPv6 performance. Chapter 8 discusses some of the ongoing and future work related to mobility management for IPv6. Some of these topics are not exclusive to IPv6 or Mobile IPv6; however, we chose to include topics related to IP mobility in general, as they were found to be within the scope and spirit of this book.

Part Four focuses on deployment issues for IPv6 and Mobile IPv6. Chapter 9 presents some of the most important mechanisms designed to allow IPv6 to be deployed in an IPv4 Internet. Chapter 10 uses 3GPP networks as an example for a third-generation cellular network, provides an overview of its architecture, and illustrates how IPv6 can be deployed in that network.

Target Readers

This book is self-contained. You need not have a strong background in the Internet or IPv6; however, basic knowledge about the Internet is needed. All of the necessary background information is provided either in the first part or in the relevant chapters. However, readers with an engineering or computer science background will have a deeper understanding of the technical issues presented in this book.

The book starts by explaining the fundamental principles of the Internet and gradually introduces more complex issues related to IPv6, mobility management, and wireless networks. Therefore, it is suited to a wide range of readers, including network practitioners, Internet developers, engineers studying the latest developments in the Internet and IPv6 mobility technologies or refreshing existing knowledge, final year undergraduate students of engineering or computer science disciplines, and postgraduate students of the same disciplines. This book is also suited to researchers in the area of mobility management, as it helps them understand the requirements and assumptions that led to the development of Mobile IPv6. Understanding these assumptions is one of the most important ingredients for a successful research program.

The Internet currently uses IPv4, which has 32 bits of addressing. But over the next few years, this is expected to be exhausted, as China and other developing countries increasingly come online. Plus as your digital camera, car, cellphone and PDA are increasingly likely to have their own Internet addresses. Beyond IPv4 is IPv6, using 128 bits.

So the question is not if IPv6 will be implemented, but when. Concomitant with this are questions about its viability, and, as a huge practical matter, how can it be incrementally deployed, side by side with existing IPv4 networks? Plus, how can mobile devices (think cellphones as the prime example) efficiently use IPv6? This is the subject of Soliman's book.

The bulk of the book revolves around a problem which can best be described by a simple analogy. Suppose you have a cellphone with a phone number, which includes an area code. Nowadays, you can take that phone to any region in your country that supports cellphones, and expect your phone to work. Even if you are outside your area code. The phone companies have implemented algorithms that allow this.

Mobility in IPv6 deals with the corresponding problem on the Internet. Imagine now that your cellphone or other device has a fixed IPv6 address. This is desirable so that others can contact you. Many issues now arise, along with possible solutions, as explained by Soliman. Like authentication and authorisation. That is, if you go to another IPv6 network and try to connect, it must somehow ascertain that you have a valid IPv6 address elsewhere.

Or consider the very act of moving between two IPv6 networks, when you are communicating with someone else. How can that person's messages be forwarded to your new (temporary) IPv6 location, and how can it be done efficiently?

The book describes these problems (and others) and their proposed solutions in detail. I say proposed solutions deliberately. As Soliman makes clear, some of these solutions will need further research as to their efficacies, and may well be modified as a result of this. You can get a clear sense of the subject and what the key issues are from this book.

This is one of the best books I've read in years. Anyone who has not yet experienced "no-mind" (alertness without thinking) is not living well. Thinking or reading about it prepares one to open up to being. Reading this book and digesting its contents slowly is excellent preparation for living more wisely.

Love always matters

It isn't often that a romantic novel features people in their 70s and 80s, but the characters in Ken Oder's second novel are concerned about their mortality. Set in the same location as his first novel, The Closing,a legal mystery, this is a different story with different characters. Billy Kirby, Amos Hukstep,Toby Vess, and Stogie have been hunting buddies for 60 plus years although they are slowing down now, in 1968, and are not sure how much longer they are going to be able to go to their cabin in the mountains. The men have had different outcomes in their lives. Billy has grown wealthy from real estate, Toby is a deputy sheriff, and Amos hasn't had much financial success. When Amos discovers that Billy had an affair with his wife, Jolene, in 1915, he determines to seek revenge. The author shows us that love and passion have no expiration date and betrayal hurts, no matter how long ago it happened. I'm sure Ken Oder has other interesting characters to tell us about in the next Whippoorwill Hollow novel.

A Thought Provoking Read

To slip this novel soundly into a specific genre would be doing it a disservice. It is historical – 1960’s. It is romantic, but not a romance. There is some mystery because the reader has to wonder if the main character will survive. I guess this is a literary novel.

The writing is simply beautiful. For instance, listen to this:

***** Toby pulled into the dirt lot beside the store. It was a rectangular frame box with peeling paint. Smoke curled from its stovepipe and the morning rain still dripped from rusty gutters that clung desperately to the roof line by scattered nails. The storefront was a concrete porch with a single gas pump in front of it. Two long wooden benches sat on the porch on each side of the door. Four rotting wooden pillars buckled under the weight of the porch’s sagging roof. The old store had already been remodeled and repaired a hundred times, and another facelift was overdue.

The author takes you back in time to a place in a rural Virginia town and gently revealed parts and pieces of its topography and people.

The story is not a gentle one. It is about some old friends who were going to go to their cabin up the mountain, until a few of them declared they are too old to continue to participate. That night one of the old men, Billy, is almost asleep in his bed, is awakened by noises, then confronted by a ski-masked intruder with a gun. What happens next is an edge of your seat read. The conclusions are a complete surprise. The things Billy has done to some of his friends and family produces a lot of regret and worse.

The emotional range portrayed by the characters as they each struggle with memories or consequences of the same events brought me to tears or smiles. I am reminded that all our actions bring consequences even heart wounding ones.

An Accomplished and Thoughtful Story of Life

Once an author writes a story, especially in a series, all the stories seem similar. Ken Oder obviously has much depth. Although both stories in the Whipporwill Hollow books take place in the same area, and around the same time frame (1960s), they are very different tales. The first deals with corruption in the legal system. This book, Old Wounds to the Heart, is more of character development. It involves an aging man, thinking back over his life. He realizes how his actions have affected so many. But he has hope. He has determination. And he has growth. So many stories are about younger people. This is about older folks, who, in spite of aging, still want love, companionship,and meaning to their life . It is never too late to become more than you are. There are many characters in the book. They deal with what life has given them and what they have done in their life, by either taking responsibility for their actions, or by blaming others. Mr. Oder has accomplished a meaningful, suspenseful, thoughtful story that should give us thought to take stock of our own lives, our own actions and he lets us know it is not too late to make amends to those we have hurt, and to love ourselves so we can love others.

The complete inside story of the WIld Weasels

This book gives the complete inside story - from the first F4 shot down by an SA-2 to the crash development program of equipment and tactics to their deployment on the battlefield. From the early days in Vietnam to the first Gulf War this book tells what it was like to joust with SAMS in the most dangerous mission in the Air Force! The "inside the cockpit" accounts by pilots who were there are truly hair-raising, and provide graphic testimony to the reason their unofficial motto was YGBSM! The only reason the book does not rate 5 stars is the first section regarding the crash development program is a bit tedious.

This book is a collection of first-person stories about a little known portion of the air war over North Vietnam. Specifically, it covers the hardware development and fighter tactics the USAF used against the enemy's surface-to-air missile(SAM)sites. Read what it feels like to have a 2,000 miles per hour missile, as big as a telephone pole, coming at you. It is amazing that any of the Weasel crews completed the required 100 missions before they could go home. The History Channel called these "Suicide Missions." Highly recommended.

About the Author
As long as I can remember, I've made up adventures. I admit the early creative stories featured me riding the range with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and saving the West. What a disappointment to learn that Roy was exclusively committed to Dale! Eventually, my best friend from across the street and I decided to become better detectives than Nancy Drew. We drove our parents and neighbors crazy sticking our pert little noses where they didn't belong. About that time I started writing down my adventures, but mostly I was a reader. Not until I read Nora Roberts' early novels did I decide to create my own romance manuscripts. My road to publishing was a lot slower than Nora's was. No surprise there! I still read Nora's books—as well as those of countless other authors—but now I write full time. Unless life interferes, that is. My Hero and I live one a small acreage in the ranching and horse country of North Central Texas. Finally, my childhood dream has come true and I’m in the midst of cowboys. Our two daughters are grown and in their own homes not far away. Living with Hero and me now are Webster, our sweet black Shih Tzu, and our two shorthaired cats: Sebastian, a large black and white tuxedo who thinks he's our watchcat; and Bailey Erin, a shy apricot tabby who mostly stays in my office. When I'm not writing, I love spending time with family, reading, traveling with Hero, browsing antique malls and estate sales, and digging into family history and genealogy. HIGH STAKES BRIDE - Book 2 of the Men of Stone Mountain delivers a Winning Hand!

I truly have loved reading the Men of Stone Mountain series by (in my opinion) the Queen of Western Romance, Caroline Clemmons. When I first read Book One of the series, BRAZOS BRIDE, I fell in love with the hunky hero, Micah Stone and felt he was my favorite among the three Stone brothers introduced. But, after reading Book Two of the series, HIGH STAKES BRIDE, gotta admit that Zach is now my favorite brother. I have a feeling that when the much anticipated Book Three comes out, I will also find Joel Stone my "new" favorite. You might consider me fickle, but the reason the hero in each book endeared themselves so much to this reader is because Caroline Clemmons has such an amazing skill at creating characters that are unforgettable, each with their own unique personality and voice. You not only see their strengths but also gain deeper insight into their scars and hidden wounds that make up the multi-dimensional man they have become. So, it is only right and proper that the reader should fall madly in love with each hero of each book, and think no one compares to him.

I also very much loved the heroine in HIGH STAKES BRIDE, Mary Alice Price, who is just as brave and determined to take control of her life as she is inherently sweet, honest, amusing, and wholly endearing. One of the first things about her that won me over was her cute personality and often amusing habit of seeking intervention and/or understanding through impromptu silent prayer during the many challenges and life-threatening events that she faces on her journey. She definitely has an engaging personality that leaps off the page. Pairing her up with a retired Texas Ranger who's just been jilted at the altar for the second time, and this time by a Mail Order Bride, is pure genius. He doesn't trust women and wants nothing to do with any female not a member of his family. Alice is on the run from murderous step-brothers who staked and lost her in a poker game. All she wants now is to escape to Atlanta and start a new life. Without giving too much away, both Zach and Alice decide to gamble on one another temporarily in order to achieve their respective goals and go their separate ways. A bargain is made that requires alot of bluffing to friends and family, and the temptation for both Alice and Zach to just fold and walk away is a constant struggle. Danger is ever near, but the biggest risk Alice and Zach face just may be losing their hearts. A must read, and a keeper for your library. Am really looking forward to Book 3 in the series, and optimistic that the series will continue with secondary characters introduced in the first two books, including a future look at Seth Stone (introduced in this book).

I loved this story as much as I loved the one preceding it!! This is truely a wonderful series! From the very beginning it captures you attention and I had a seriously hard time putting it down! I can not wait for the next in the series to hear the last Stone Brothers' story!!

Let's Pretend

19th century Texas - The men are brave and strong, and women are few and far between. Zach Stone has a ranch with a nice stone house, but he needs a wife. Mary Alice Price has nothing but troubles. Desperation forces injured Alice into Zach's camp, and a hero has to be heroic to the damsel in distress.
On the journey to Zach's ranch, they add 7 year-old orphan, Seth Barnes, and his dog Harry to the group. Desperation forces Zach and Alice to agree to a brief pretend engagement. Zach's aunts, brothers, an attentive preacher, and assorted neighbors make it difficult to just pretend an attraction. A life as Zach's wife tempts Mary Alice to re-think her plans to go to Atlanta. Zach soon finds it hard to send his pretend bride packing.
The pretended engagement is frought with problems; Alice's green hair, a smitten preacher, Zach's once white but now bright yellow shirt, and a growing mutual love that can survive the final knowledge about Alice's step-family.
