A free-market fight against socialist tyranny

Brian Crozier asks a fascinating question. The covert 'war in the shadows' between freedom and slavery is generally presented as a clash between governments: during the Cold War, it was NATO and the West versus the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact; CIA versus KGB; MI6 versus GRU. But why? Why couldn't there also be a private-sector organization, a collection of free agents, doing what the Free World's governments couldn't or wouldn't do?
That forms the basis of this fascinating book, part history, part autobiography, about Crozier's efforts, and those of his allies, to undermine and destroy international socialism on a private-sector basis.
Crozier is a journalist and political scientist, but also an experience intelligence hand and long-time advisor to governments. Motivated in part by Western spy agencies' bureaucratic incompetence, their penetration by Soviet moles, and their governments' 'own goals' and shortsighted legislative restrictions, Crozier struck out on his own. This book is chock-full of stories of disinformation campaigns, subversive tricks, and spy-versus-spy maneuvers that rank, in my mind, with some of the best of Ludlum or Le Carré. Conservatives will also enjoy the eyewitness portraits of Reagan and Thatcher in action.
Very highly recommended to any student of espionage or the Cold War, or any fan of spy fiction.

Great book!

This book, second in the Demonata series, was a great follow-up to the amazing thriller of the 1st book. It delivers action, adventure and thrills as Kernel Fleck, a young boy, delves into the horrifying world of demons and Desciples (Demon hunters) to destroy the demons who stole his brother. I find this book a fantastic edition to the already thrilling Darren Shan collection of books. Buy it! (A warning: I am a BIG horror movie fan and I almost threw up from the bloody description, so be careful =)

Great Book

I think that this book was really good and a lot better than the last one. This book takes place before the last book did, and is a lot more exiteing than the other book. In this story, a town where a boy named Kernal is living is visited by a murderous demon. This demon comes through a window opened from his own universe and quickly starts tearing apart the gathered townsfolk. When this demon lays eyes on Kernal's baby brother, something odd happens. The demon runs up, grabs the baby, and runs back through the window. Willing to die to get his brother back, Kernal runs through the window after the demon and ends up in a whole different universe full of strange things and aweful horrors. Kernal finds a group of out of the ordinary people, teams up with them, and attempts to find the demon and get his brother back. He has no idea what he is getting into, otherwise he would have gone right back through the window into his own world.

Demonata #2: The Demon Thief

After reading the first book in Shan's Demonata series I could not wait till the next book was released. I was not disappointed when the book came out. The second book seems to take place some time preceding the first book as one of the characters from the first book is "in training." However, according to the sneak peek of the third book the first narroator comes back to continue his story. The second book does have some gore and sickening discriptions; the narrator even vomits at one point but turns this into an advantace (I'll let you see how for yourself). Overall a very intersting read. Can't wait for the next book.

About the Author

Lisa M. Bitel is Professor of History and Religion at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Land of Women and Isle of the Saints, both from Cornell, as well as Landscape with Two Saints and Women in Early Medieval Europe, 400–1100.

Matt Gainer is a documentary photographer whose work explores social and political movements, religious identity and community, and tensions between people and the environments they occupy. His work has been exhibited in North America and Europe at the Brukenthal National Museum, the Museo D'Arte Contemporanea Roma, the El Paso Museum of Art, and the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juarez.

About the Author

HitRECord founder and director Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s acting career has managed to garner a massive popular appeal while maintaining a widely respected artistic integrity. I love this tiny book. The 128 pages are like a series of well paced centerfold avant-garde theater and curtains open and close with the flip of each page. The storytelling is punctual, but unlike punch lines, they are surprisingly eloquent and provocative. Texts and images compliment each other in a 1+1>2 way, leaving a complex aftertaste that begs to be re-savored. I also want to compliment on the built quality of this physical object that fits in my palm, the weight, binding and coloring are simply top notch.

Tiny in size but the creativity contained within this small volume never ceases to amaze me.

I’ve had the luxury of reading and reviewing both volumes one and two so when I had the opportunity to review this new volume, how could I refuse?

Once again, hitRECord, founded by Joseph Gordon-Levitt has put together another collection of amazing stories which happen to be only one or two pages long. The beauty of this project is that anyone can join the community and submit their work for a chance to be included in the next volume.

This is a fun book and would make a nice gift. I have all three and they do look great on my shelf. Most are simple black and white line drawings but there are shots of color here and there. I really enjoy them and love that artists everywhere, have the opportunity to be published through this project.

The collaborative concept behind hitrecord is brilliant on its own, and the fact that you can have a physical example of the connected work is great! The cover is really sweet and has a nice touch to it, as well as the tiny size. Lovely!

Dismissive about the Sanctity of Human Life....

Simply put, this text is unconcerned about the sanctity of human life. While it does offer some disturbing revelations (e.g., illegal "harvesting" of bone from human cadavers) and facts about exploitations, it is deeply marred by its author's inability to make distinctions between tiny human lives and such things as umbilical cord blood.

There are unconscionable exploitations of human beings in the so-called "egg donor" and "surrogacy" industries. To the author's credit, she does expose some of the "egg donor" atrocities (See Eggsploitation for more detail.). As columnist Kathleen Parker has noted, "the recently flourishing fertility industry, from egg harvesting to surrogacy, has produced fresh and surprising alliances among former foes....Surrogacy brokers are wise to their marketplace and specifically target populations that are likely to be attracted to surrogacy....The simplicity of the human desire for children notwithstanding, there's nothing simple about the surrogacy business....Human babies are not things; their mothers are not ovens. But bartering and selling babies-to-order sure make them seem that way"

I found this book to be well written and powerful. It has left me with many questions regarding the sale of body parts.

As an introduction to the legal arguments it is clear without being overly technical.
