PERHAPS THE GREATEST but least understood love story ever told is that of the famous 17th century Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan and his beloved wife, the ethereal and enigmatic, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal monument he commissioned to declare his love for her upon her tragic death in 1631 remains unprecedented in five thousand years of recorded human history.

The chief architect of the building complex and grounds, Ahmed Lahori, labored for more than twenty years under the supervision of the Emperor and his court. He secured the skills of innumerable architects, builders, craftsmen and stonemasons from across the world to raise this unparalleled masterpiece of Islamic and Persian architecture. Since its completion, this bejeweled mausoleum along the banks of the river Yamuna in Agra, India has borne witness to the love Shah Jahan had for his beloved Queen.

“The Peacock Throne” was the name given to the exceptionally ornate throne built for Shah Jahan in 1635. Its columns and platform were embellished with precious gems including diamonds, emeralds, pearls, rubies and sapphires as well as several priceless Mughal heirlooms, most notably, the brilliant and enormous Kohinoor diamond. This pièce de résistance remains amongst the largest diamonds ever unearthed and has its ancient origins in Golconda’s Kollur diamond mines in the south central region of India. To this day, Golconda diamonds are distinguished by their exceptional brilliance, clarity and color.
The Persian invader, Nader Shah, seized the Kohinoor, along with Shah Jahan’s Peacock Throne when he invaded a considerably weaker Mughal Empire in 1739 but the diamond eventually found its way into the crown jewel collection of England when Queen Victoria was anointed Empress of India.

The lives of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz, and their extraordinary relationship are also the subject of my surreal novel. It’s an exciting, unique and wonderful story about Jannah and Qasim Ali, two twins from London who are students at Cambridge University in the early 1930’s. Jannah and Qasim are studying Mughal history during the age of the Emperor and his wife and are also their descendants.

The twins find themselves deeply frustrated at their inability to learn more about the historic love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz, beyond what’s commonly known. But their sincere desire to gain deeper insights into Mughal court life and the lives of their forbears leads them on an incredible journey from Paris and London to Delhi and Agra, eventually immersing them into the splendid age of this most famous of Mughal Emperors. The consequences of their ambitions are dramatic and unpredictable while the challenges are dangerous and numerous. But their journey is beyond rewarding.

A MUST READ for all lovers of Historical Fiction....

I have read my way through the courts of England, France, Italy, and Egypt. Having no previous knowledge of the India's Royals, I was completely taken with Vicar Sayeedi's tale of the Mughals and their extravagance. It is rare that a lovely story is loaded with quality research exacting facts and characters of the times. One falls in love with the adventurous twins winding their way through time in their quest for knowledge. If you enjoy reading court tales of England, or stories of the Italian renaissance, This book is an absolute must. I am eagerly awaiting the next book!!!

Books like people have destiny, at the risk off sounding hyperbolic, vicar sayeedi anchored this book in magnificent novelistic prose, every sentence is art and highly efficacious, devoid of emotional estrangement. As you read you will feel the warmth that accompanies the light and as the light fades you will find yourself asking the warmth to persist even after the inevitable light fades away When you near completion of reading. This book forms a magnificent mosaic of history

Even after Louise's mother remarries and she can finally look forward to moving away from Mr. Jarvis, Louise must endure one more harrowing attack before he is finally caught out. But even then, with child protection teams still very much in their infancy in the early 1980s, Louise still lives with the consequences of her unstable childhood.

Kept my interest from start to finish

After reading the book, I was surprised at the low scores some people have given this book. Yes, it is short and can be read in a couple of hours by a fast reader. However, I felt the book was well written in a natural voice and easy to follow. The very few minor typos did not create a problem for me. The story takes place in England, and the author tells of her experience of being abused by a "trusted" leader from the family's church. I was fascinated by the ploy used by the abuser, and I learned from the author how confusing it was for her. I appreciated that she shared the thought process she went through as she tried to understand what had happened to her. The author states that she wrote her story as part of writing therapy, and I'm grateful for the education it provided us readers. Very well done, "Louise."

Touching Story - highly recommended

I was lucky enough to preview the Japanese version of the anime'. Now I have to get my hands on everything to do with this series. And for the reviewers who are squeamish about yuri -- I watched this BECAUSE it was yuri. It's about time we have a unabashed anime story that meets the subject of women loving each other head on, which Stawberry Panic does with heart and substance. It deals with very serious topics, losing someone dear to death, rivalry, duty and honor, and coming of age. To me it was a very satisfying story that touched me like nothing else has lately. I will be looking for each novel and manga when they are released -- with joy!

if it's as good as the anime....

iv watched the two seasons of the anime, and if the manga is anything like the anime then you will probably laugh and cry. (hopefully not at the same time :P)

If you are a guy looking for some hot lesbian fiction then this is NOT for you. the pace is slow, focusing much more on romance and love than lesbianism that is raunchy or sexy. the characters and story are sweet and although there appears to be no real plot... it does surface itself eventually. making (what you were enjoying anyway) even better.

This also has a little 'slice of life' and is school oriented.

This is classified by many as Yuri, which is just girl-love, if your a girl who is worried about yuri then don't be worried :) there is much more sexuality and fanservice in the Full Metal panic series -by far- to compare.

it can be a little explicit, intercourse is assumed, not shown. Between some couples. More yuri than Marimite, but i preferd the artwork in strawberryp! anyway :)

Aesthetics - the moral imperative

The anime was a fine iteration into the genre, as well as the manga - quirky, realistic animation, beautiful artwork and an original storyline blending into a great franchise full of livery and twist.
All three - anime, manga and especially novel - are adaptions for the rest of us of a story that must be told - this Strawberry Panic. To refer to it as simply 'a yuri' is almost degrading to the quality of each installment.
It's great to finally have a well-written novel that tells what should be a classic story all over again, this time for those of us who find beauty in words. Strawberry Panic a fine example of the concept of the immortalized story, that will shine in picture, on screen, and, most importantly, in the written word.
