Summer Camp with the Wunderkinder
By A Customer
This is a great story, but I've got to admit that its not for the Salinger beginner. It tells the the story of two brothers (Buddy and Seymour Glass) at summer camp. The crazy thing about these two kids, however, is that they can do outrageous things like memorize entire books and stop the flow of blood to wounded parts of their body. The story is very heavy with religious references (in fact, a portion of the story comes off as being like some sort of eastern mythology reading list), and the writing style is very sophisticated. In other words, its hard to read. But if you've read Salinger's other works and are familiar with the exploits of the Glass Family, or if you have a sincere interest in the meaning and mystery of life, this is a must buy. Do yourself a favor and read it.

Response to the only posted review
By A Customer
This isn't a response to Mr.Salinger's story, Hapworth 16, 1924, but, rather, to the only reader's review posted on Amazon as of October 5, 2000. This work is not new, it's a piece Salinger published in the late 60's, I believe in The New Yorker, for which he recently authorized republication in book form. Other previously published stories by Salinger that originally appeared in The New Yorker or other periodicals but that were never published elsewhere are available in any good university library, in bound back issues of those periodicals, or perhaps on microfiche. What's intriguing about the publication of this book is Salinger's decision to reintroduce it now. I'm happy for the generation of young people who WILL be reading it for the first time and getting to meet Seymour and Buddy Glass and feel like "all their lights are on."

hapworth story
By Mark Stewart
You know this is actually a very good story. I have been following the references in this story for an entire decade without having exhausted them all, and every one of those references has enriched my life.
The way I think of it, camp Hapworth is the world, and the people there are the people in the world. When it says the counsellors are "counsellors in name only", or that most people merely "senesce" instead of gaining wisdom as they age...
There is obviously nothing to say about it in a review such as this. Well worth your time to read.
