Best known for their contributions to architecture, furniture design (especially the Eames chair), industrial design, film and photography, Charles and Ray Eames remain among the most renowned American designers of the twentieth century. The couple married in 1941 and moved to California, where they pursued their furniture design in molded plywood. During the war they were commissioned by the U.S. Navy to produce molded plywood splints, stretchers and experimental glider shells. In 1946, Evans Products began producing the Eames' molded plywood furniture. Their iconic molded plywood chair was called "the chair of the century" by the influential architectural critic Esther McCoy.
In 1949, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in Pacific Palisades, their design and imaginative use of materials making this house a mecca for architects and designers internationally. Today it is considered one of the most important postwar residences built anywhere in the world. After the war, the Eames continued to create new furniture designs, such as the Fiberglass Chairs (1950), the famous Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956), the Time Life stool (1960), the 3473 sofa (1964) and the seating for Dulles and O'Hare airports--a design still in use in lounges around the world today. In the 70s they expanded their operations into cinema, producing many beautiful short films. Charles and Ray received honorary degrees and awards from universities and organizations across the country. The Eames Office still operates today.

my fourth grade sons are quite comfortable with this math program

I use the Common Core edition of EnVision Math for our homeschool math. After five weeks of school, my fourth grade sons are quite comfortable with this math program. We use the student edition of Envision Math as well as the Assessment Source Book. As a highly qualified teacher, I choose to assess my students after each topic is completed by use of the Topic Test. In my opinion, students should be thoroughly assessed with 20 problems that include constructed response and multiple choice test items, otherwise I feel like a lazy teacher. If an assessment does not include enough problems, I choose additional problems from the topic's Quick Check sections, which include three to four problems per topic section, to further assess my sons. To note, the Assessment Source Book also includes other assessments, such as a placement test and benchmark tests, but I have not assessed my students with either.

A fine pocket prayerbox for English-speaking Orthodox

The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America introduced this pocket prayerbook in 1956 and it has gone on to become one of the most popular in the English-speaking world. It is divided into three general parts. The first contains the prayers for morning, mid-day and evening, as well as dozens of occasional prayers such as that before an icon of Christ, for married people, and for the sick. The second part consists of some general outlines of theology meant for personal reflection, such as "The Seven Grievous Sins" and "The Chief Aids to Penitence". The third part is the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, though unless you worship in the Antiochian Archdiocese you won't be able to follow along with this at liturgy since your jurisdiction's translation probably differs slightly.

This is the only English-language Orthodox prayerbook that is this large yet takes up so little space in one's pocket. I recommend it.

Much in a small space

According to the 1980 Foreward by Metropolitan Phillip of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, this small book is "the most popular and highly distributed Orthodox prayer book in the English language". This is easy to understand, for the book(let) gathers three parts: Daily Prayers and Spiritual Helps, Prayers and Devotions for Confession and Holy Communion, The Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom; plus an appendix, Prayers for Various Occasions.

Despite some differences in the translation of the Divine Liturgy presented here, and that used in other Orthodox Churches (the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil is also in use some places, and on some occasions), this book collects togeather in a convenient package most everything necessary for "the more immediate spiritual needs of the Orthodox Christian", as Metropolitan Phillip writes.

My only suggestion would be to reset the Appendix in a slightly larger, and somewhat less muddy typeface. But this is only a quibble. I consider this a vital possession for any Orthodox Christian, but especially for converts--or even would-be converts. It is both succinct and useful.

Great introduction to prayers

I just started going to church again, and I really want to carry over my spiritual life into the everyday. The pocket prayer book is perfect with prayers, the Divine Liturgy, and even some little extras like the commandments. It is easy to take everywhere for some quiet reflection. The cover is beautiful and the book itself is extremely useful.

I believe this is a book created in the Antioch tradition, but do not let that limit you, all orthodox believers would benefit from such beautiful prayers. The prayers are well written, cover every circumstance, and really encourage spiritual growth. They are selfless and devotional. I also think the prayers are comprehensive, as you say the creed, the Lord's Prayer, as well as the trisagion and troparia. It is a thorough way to express devotion and thanksgiving, and beg for repentance and mercy.

This is an excellent companion to attempt a more devout life everywhere, everyday!

I highly recommend.

A Real Treat from Mary in the Kitchen

I grew up in the 60’s with the original Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins film. I remember singing “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” and having Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious for extra credit on a spelling test in the first grade. Disney’s Mary Poppins was a big hit within the elementary crowd back then. But I never knew there was a series of books based on Mary. All I had ever seen was Disney produced books and miscellaneous products based on the Disney film.

Last week my family watched the new movie "Saving Mr. Banks". The movie indicates that Disney changed the storyline quite a bit, and I wondered how Travers had originally written her. It also opened up lots of questions about P.L. Travers and her real life. So, of course we searched the internet to read more of her bio and found articles stating that the Saving Banks movie was also a bit “Disney-fied”. Traver’s version of the events were quite different. If you are interested you can read her bio in Mary Poppins, She Wrote" The Life of P. L. Travers by Valerie Lawson here at Amazon.

We also learned that Travers had written a series of six novels based on the Mary Poppins character ( all here at Amazon), plus this book - Mary Poppins in the Kitchen: A Cookery Book with a Story – and an additional book titled, Mary Poppins A to Z. I have three grandchildren, and more in production. So I just can't have too much Mary Poppins to read here at Granny's house.
I ordered the six book series, the A to Z book and this book of Mary in the Kitchen, which was the first one to be delivered.

My daughter (in her 30;s) and my granddaughter (4) and I all love Mary Poppins. So immediately after delivery we settled down to read the first chapter. We couldn't stop there. My granddaughter was begging for more, so we also read the 2nd chapter, before insisting (as Mary would) that it was time for naps. This book is pure Mary - with no Disney-fication, and she shines with all of her typical wit and wisdom. There is at least one full page illustration in each chapter. The illustrations have an "old world" feel to them, but there is so much activity in them that it catches our imagination. Everybody is busy doing something in the picture relating to the story you are reading. My granddaughter loved picking out which of the children were Jane and Michael in each picture. And Mary is unmistakable.

I've had a hard time not reading ahead, but I promised to wait until they come back this week so we can continue our adventure with Mary Poppins in the Kitchen together. I confess that I did skip to the back of the book and read some of the recipes. They look delicious and easy enough for young beginning cooks- with some help from Mom or Granny. I can’t wait to get in the kitchen with my granddaughter and try out Mary’s recipes. I think we'll start with her oatmeal cookies and gingerbread stars.

I still love Walt’s Mary Poppins, but it is so delightful to meet the “real” Mary, Jane and Michael as they leap from each page. No wonder these books thrilled a generation of youngsters and their parents when they were first published. No wonder they inspired Disney to put her on the big screen. If you love Mary Poppins, you'll love this book of cooking adventures with Mary, the children and the whole neighborhood around Number Seventeen Cherry-Tree Lane.

Liked the movie much better

As a mature adult who was just curious to experience the original, I can't say whether Mary Poppins will appeal to a child. But the book certainly didn't appeal to me. I found the title character cold and incomprehensible. The story does not have a plot thread, except that Mary Poppins appears suddenly and exits suddenly. The chapters detailing the many strange happenings in Mary's company have no connection to one another. Her stint as a nanny has no positive effect on the parents. In fact the mother is happy to see her gone. Mary's powers to shift between "reality" and some parallel universe come from having relatives in the animal kingdom!

I much prefer the Disney movie, in which the family benefits from Mary's presence by evolving in a more playful, loving way. And Mary seems to really care about the children in the film, which, to my astonishment, doesn't come across in the book. The book's children are drawn to her, but she seems distant, mysterious, stern, and unpredictable. We were sorry to have her delightful image spoiled.

Saving Mr Banks got me to read this

After watching the movie "Saving Mr. Banks", I bought this book. The movie I thought was amazing. The ending even better as it brought the character and movie home. This book I bought as I was curious how accurate the movie was on the fighting for the character and scenes was. This book proved to be well written. I tried to read it as just a classic book that was so popular back before the movie. How in the movie said, "this book was something kids loved to read". Probably true before TV and Harry Potter. This is an amazing book in its own right. It's simple and creates in depth characters and fantasies that you will be able to compare with both movies, "Mary Poppins" and "Saving Mr. Banks". I loved the book. I would have set out for the adventure I did by reading both, Mary Poppins and Marry Poppins, She Wrote to compare and delve further into the history of this whole project and now historical movie. I would suggest reading Mary Poppins first. Then get into the book about the life of P.L. Travers. Good Luck!
