It is undoubtedly the most accurate and most important first-hand general history of the Civil War.
About the Author
General Edward Porter Alexander (1835-1910) was Robert E. Lee’s artillery commander for most of the Civil War. After the Confederate surrender, he served as an executive at various railroad companies and became a respected author. He died in Savannah, Georgia.

Combat leadership Gen Lee

From this book it is clear the Confederacy could not win the Civil War. Lee's skill as a General simply made it possible for the war to last longer and resulted in vastly more soldiers killed on both sides 750,000 killed The carnage was incredible Lee must have had a vendetta against someone to stand by and watch the killing knowing he could not win and no country in their right mind would side with the South. He was praised as a hero sustaining this slaughter for 2 years 9 months. Again from this book it is crystal clear the South could not win.

WHOSE TO BE BLAMED OR BE PRAISED !

The author writes a good accessment of the battles he was a part of during the war. He places blame or praise to the ones he believes should receive it. Even blames the grand leader, (Robert E. Lee) when he thinks it is deserved. It is explained in the book why he feels the way he does. Sometimes he gets detailed and would probebly bore the novice but for someone who is into the Civil War it's a great read.

He is not sparing of criticism of some of the biggest names in the War, including his beloved Gen. Robert E.Lee. His eyewitness account of the negotiations leading to Lee and Grant's meeting at Appomattox is insightful and compelling.
